History, however, never repeats itself precisely, and the movement back toward modernist concerns that is apparent among younger architects hardly means that we are destined to relive the early days of modernism as it appeared in the 1920s, or that all that post-modernism has done will be erased. The first theorists of modern architecture, back in the early decades of this century, believed that they were going to change the world; todays young modernists have few such ambitions. To them, modernism signifies a turn inward, more of a quest for pure form, and this alone distinguishes their work from their predecessors.
